How It Works
Continuous footings (strip footings) run beneath walls to distribute loads to the soil. Typical residential footings are 16-24 inches wide and 8-12 inches deep. The footing width should be at least twice the wall width. IRC code requires footings extend at least 12 inches below the frost line and rest on undisturbed or compacted soil. A number 4 rebar cage (two bars top, two bottom) is standard for most residential footings.
