How It Works

Excavated soil expands (swells) when removed from the ground. Swell factors: sand 10-15%, clay 20-30%, rock 40-60%. A standard dump truck holds 10-14 cubic yards of loose material. Bank cubic yards measures soil in the ground; loose cubic yards measures it in the truck. Always call 811 before you dig to locate underground utilities. Topsoil should be stockpiled separately for re-use. Disposal costs vary from $10-30 per cubic yard depending on haul distance and landfill fees.
