How It Works

Lintels support the wall above openings (doors, windows). For CMU walls, lintel blocks are U-shaped blocks filled with rebar and grout. For spans up to 4 feet, a single course of lintel blocks with #4 rebar works. For 4-8 feet, double up or use steel angles. Over 8 feet requires engineered steel or precast. Bearing length (how far the lintel extends past the opening) should be at least 8 inches per side. Steel angles for brick veneer are typically L3.5x3.5x5/16 for spans up to 6 feet.
