How It Works
Masonry wall capacity depends on compressive strength (f'm), net area, and slenderness ratio (height divided by thickness). Hollow CMU walls use only about 52% of gross area for load calculations. Grouting cells increases net area to 100%. The slenderness ratio (h/t) penalizes tall, thin walls: keep h/t below 20 for unreinforced walls. Reinforced walls can handle higher slenderness ratios. This calculator provides estimates only. Always consult a structural engineer for load-bearing wall design.
