How It Works

Mortar types by compressive strength: Type M (2,500 psi) for foundations and retaining walls, Type S (1,800 psi) for structural walls and below-grade, Type N (750 psi) for above-grade general purpose. Type S is the most commonly used. Pre-mixed mortar bags are convenient but expensive for large jobs. Mixing Portland cement, lime, and sand from bulk materials saves 40-60%. Joint thickness should be 3/8 inch for both block and brick. Tool joints when thumbprint hard for best results.
