How It Works
Natural stone density varies significantly by type: granite and slate are densest at about 168 lbs/cu ft, while sandstone is lightest at about 137 lbs/cu ft. A standard granite countertop slab (3cm thick, 6x3 ft) weighs about 400 lbs. Weight matters for structural support: floors need to handle 40+ lbs/sq ft for stone tile. Always check floor joist capacity before installing stone on upper floors. Stone is sold by the square foot (thin slabs) or by the ton (bulk/landscape).
