How It Works
Retaining walls over 4 feet high typically require engineering and permits. For gravity walls (no reinforcement), the base should be 2 feet wide minimum with 6 inches of compacted crushed stone. Each course should step back (batter) about 1 inch per course for stability. Drainage is critical: place perforated pipe behind the base course with drain gravel (no fines) and landscape fabric to prevent soil clogging. Glue cap blocks with construction adhesive rated for masonry.
