How It Works

Thin-set mortar (thinset) is the adhesive that bonds tile to the substrate. Trowel size determines coverage: larger notches use more material but provide better support for larger tiles. Use modified (polymer-modified) thinset for most applications as it has better bond strength and flexibility. For tiles larger than 15 inches, back-butter (apply thinset to both the substrate and the tile back) to achieve 95% coverage. White thinset is used under light-colored stone to prevent color bleed-through.
